Of the Aftermath

This is part of a story that I'm working on for the Writer's of the Future contest. I will likely post the story in its entirety after the judging is finished. To prevent myself from being disqualified, though, I will only post a brief section for now.

It was just after seven o’clock in the morning and I was nearly ready to hit the road. I had packed everything that I thought I would need for the weekend and changed into my gym clothes. My girlfriend, Jackie, and I were planning to head straight to the rock gym when I got to town for an early workout. I did not want to waste any of the time the two of us had together this weekend; being dressed for the gym when I got there would save the unnecessary minutes it would take to change in her apartment. That, and I wanted to use those extra minutes to make her a surprise breakfast when she woke up.

So I've finished draft 1 of the story I talked about last time. It's about 7,000 words long, which places it securely in the "short story" realm. Unfortunately, I'm not sure just yet about whether or not I want to publish the story. It's of a very sensitive nature and I don't know a) how it will be received or b) how I will be viewed for writing it in the first place.

As I go through and work on the second draft I might post some snippets here. To send it in for the Writers of the Future contest, though, my snippets must be very short or they might disqualify the story.

Stay tuned and I'll let you know.

I've been working on another short story lately based off of another one of those weird dreams I seem to have frequently. Unfortunately for you, I won't post anything here until I'm done with it and even then it will be significantly abridged. My goal is to finish the story before I take my trip to Asia so I can get it proofread and sent off to the Writers of the Future contest.

If you want a hint at what the story is about, I incorporated the idea-creation process into my Day 7 post over on Eric's Weird World. Feel free to look at it and tell me what you think either here or over there. Keep in mind if you read the rest of the blog that it is fictional and only inspired by my life.

Good Books

I broke down today and bought Eldest, the second book of the Inheritance Series by Christopher Paolini. I read Eragon long before the movie came out and couldn't wait to get the second book in the series. I guess this means I won't be writing much for a couple of days so I can complete the next leg in Paolini's story.

On the upside, I will still be updating "Eric's Weird World" on a daily basis if you want to keep up with some of my other work. Let me know what you think of my hundred days idea. I might want to continue with another kind of story. Let me know if you have a genre you'd like me to use for my next installment.

Follow-up

I hope you all enjoyed that little tidbit about the four different characters that I posted the other day. It's the first part of a short I'm working on. Trust me, those four quickies will be fleshed out a bit more, and other narratives will follow those as well.

What I'd like from anyone who is interested is some feedback about the imagery. I think these sections are pretty well painted, but I'd like to hear what you think about it, too. What works? What needs more clarification? Is there anything that flat out makes no sense? Is there another direction or profession you'd like to see me take on? Any help is very appreciated! Just leave a comment on this page (If you don't want me to publish the comment, just leave a note to that effect and I'll respect your wishes).
